How the Firearm Training &
Licensing Process Works
Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide explaining how firearm training, SAPS competency, and the firearm licensing process work in South Africa — helping you become a responsible firearm owner.
Step 1: REGISTER
Sign up with an accredited firearm training provider. Bring your ID and proof of payment to receive your learner material.
Step 2: SELF-STUDY
Study your manual and complete the open-book exam at your own pace. This prepares you for your final assessments.
Step 3: APPOINTMENT
Book your lecture, closed-book test, and range shoot with your provider. All sessions are completed under supervision.
Step 4: CERTIFICATE
After passing your assessments, you’ll receive your Proficiency Certificate & Statement of Results (SoR).
Step 5: COMPETENCY
You can now apply for a Competency Certificate from the SAPS station closest to your home address.
Step 6: PURCHASE
Once your Competency Certificate is officially approved, you may buy a firearm from a registered dealer.
Step 7: LICENSE
You can now apply for your firearm license at SAPS with your motivation, firearm details, & required documents.
Step 8 — COLLECT
When your license is approved, collect your firearm from the dealer. You are now a licensed firearm owner.
