Firearm Proficiency,
Competency & Licensing
This guide walks you through the full process of becoming a licensed firearm owner in South Africa — starting with your proficiency training, moving into competency, and finally applying for your firearm license.
Every step is explained so you know exactly where to begin and what to expect.
STEP 1: REGISTER
Sign up with an accredited firearm training provider. Bring your ID and proof of payment to receive your learner material.
STEP 2: SELF-STUDY
Study your manual and complete the open-book exam at your own pace. This prepares you for your final assessments.
STEP 3: APPOINTMENT
Book your lecture, closed-book test, and range shoot with your provider. All sessions are completed under supervision.
STEP 4: CERTIFICATE
Once you pass your assessments, you’ll receive your Proficiency Certificate and your Statement of Results (SoR).
STEP 5: COMPETENCY
You can now apply for a Competency Certificate at the SAPS station closest to your home address.
STEP 6: PURCHASE
When your Competency Certificate is officially approved, you may purchase a firearm from a registered dealer.
STEP 7: LICENSE
Submit your firearm license application at SAPS together with your motivation, firearm details, & supporting documents.
STEP 8: COLLECT
Once your license is approved, collect your firearm from the dealer. You are now a licensed firearm owner.
