Once registered at an Accredited Training Centre, you will receive your training material.  You are required to do self-study and complete the OPEN book exam provided, BEFORE attending a class.

Once you are done with the self-study and OPEN book exam, you can contact your Training Provider to book your appointment. 

BASIC training is usually a full day 8am – 5pm. Theory (CLOSED book exam) and practical exams are conducted on the same day. 

INTERMEDIATE training (Business purposes) is conducted over 2 days.

On successful completion of the proficiency training, you will be issued with your firearm training certificate and statement of results (SOR).

Normally you should receive your firearm training certificate and statement of results (SOR) within 1-7 days after you have successfully completed your training.

You can then apply for a Competency Certificate from the SAPS closest to your home.

Firearm Licence Waiting Period – SAPS process firearm licence and competency certificate applications within 120 working days.

If you are a first-time gun owner, you will need to submit two applications to SAPS. The first for firearm competency. The second will be for a licence to possess the specific firearm you have chosen to licence.

  • You must successfully pass the prescribed test to prove your knowledge of the Firearms Control Act, 2000 (Act No 60 of 2000), as well as the prescribed training and practical test regarding the safe and efficient handling of a firearm at an accredited training provider.
  • The competency certificate remains valid for the same period of validity as the period determined in the Firearms Control Act, 2000, in respect of the licence to which the competency relates.
  • A competency certificate must specify whether it relates to competency to
    • possess a firearm
    • trade in firearms
    • manufacture firearms
    • conduct business as a gunsmith.

    Before you may possess a firearm, you must obtain a firearm licence from the South African Police Service. You need a licence for every firearm that you possess. Below is a brief overview:

    Step 1 – Complete your Proficiency training

    Do your proficiency training at any Accredited Training Centre.  To find a Training Provider near you please follow the link https://firearmtrainers.co.za/training-providers/

    Step 2 – Apply for Competency at SAPS

    Once you have completed your proficiency training, you can apply for your Competency Certificate from the SAPS closest to your home.

    Step 3 – Apply for your Firearm License at SAPS

    Once your Competency Certificate has been issued, you may apply for your firearm license at SAPS.

STEP 2:  Competency certificate: R84,00

STEP 3:  Firearm license: R168,00

To start your firearm training you need to visit an Accredited Training Centre to register.  To register the Training Centre will require a Certified Copy of your ID and payment.

Once you have the obtained your firearm training certificate and statement of results (SOR), you never have to repeat the PROFICIENCY TRAINING AGAIN – the certificates don’t expire as long as you have the originals.

Accredited Training Providers must, according to current legislation, keep portfolios of evidence of all Learners up to 6 years.

  • Any person who is 21 years and older
  • A South African citizen or a holder of a permanent South African residence permit.
  • PROFICIENCY is issued by the Accredited Firearm Training Provider where you completed your open book, closed book, and practical test.
  • COMPETENCY is issued to you by the South African Police Service. In order to be able to apply for competency, you must first be issued with a proficiency certificate.
  • STEP 1:  Competency Application (Once you have completed your proficiency training, you can apply for your Competency Certificate)
    • Compete a SAPS 517 Application for a Competency Certificate
    • Two (2) ID Photo’s colour
    • R84 competency application at SAPS
    • Proof of Applicant Address
    • Two (2) copies of Original Training Provider Certificate
    • Two (2) copies of PFTC Statement of Results
    • Two (2) copies of Original bar-coded ID Book, ID Card (Back and Front)
    • Three (3) People’s Details you will nominate to be character witness to Applicant (If married spouse if single nearest family member. Other may be a friend, neighbor, or colleague.
  • STEP 2:  Firearm Application (Once your Competency Certificate has been issued, you may apply for your firearm license at SAPS)
    • SAPS 271 Application for Licence to Possess a Firearm
    • Two (2) ID Photo’s colour
    • R168 per application at SAPS
    • Proof of Applicant Address
    • Two (2) copies of Original Training Provider Certificate
    • Two (2) copies of PFTC Statement of Results
    • Two (2) copies of Original bar-coded ID Book, ID Card (Back and Front)
    • Two (2) colour photos of your safe (One open show the 2 roll bolts against wall or floor and one show a little bit of the wall or floor)
