How to get a Firearm License in South Africa

A simple, step-by-step guide to becoming a licensed firearm owner.

Navigating South Africa’s firearm licensing system can feel overwhelming the first time you look at it. However, once you understand the correct order of each step, the process becomes clear and manageable.

This guide explains the full process — from initial proficiency training to collecting your licensed firearm from a dealer — so you know exactly where to begin and what to expect at each stage.

⭐ Step 1: Register With an Accredited Training Provider

Your journey starts with training.
Visit an accredited firearm training provider and sign up for the unit standards you need. You will need your ID and proof of payment to receive your learner manual and study materials. This is your foundation — everything starts here.

⭐ Step 2: Self-Study at Your Own Pace

Once you have your manual, you can begin studying. This includes:
- Reading the learner guide
- Completing your open-book knowledge exam at home
- Preparing for the final assessments

*Self-study ensures you understand the legal responsibilities, safe handling principles, and foundational firearm knowledge required by law.

⭐ Step 3: Book Your Appointment

After your self-study is complete, you return to your provider for supervised assessments. This session includes:
- A lecture
- A closed-book knowledge test
- A practical range shoot

*All assessments are completed in person under direct supervision to ensure safety, accuracy, and compliance with national regulations.

⭐ Step 4: Receive Your Certificates

Once you successfully pass both theoretical and practical assessments, you will receive:
- Your Proficiency Certificate
- Your Statement of Results (SOR)

*These documents are needed for your Competency Certificate application with SAPS.

⭐ Step 5: Apply for Your Competency Certificate

With your training complete, you can now apply for a Competency Certificate at your closest SAPS station.

⭐ Step 6: Purchase Your Firearm

Once SAPS approves your Competency Certificate, you may purchase a firearm from any registered dealer.

⭐ Step 7: Submit Your Firearm License Application

Return to the SAPS station to submit your firearm license application.

⭐ Step 8: Collect Your Firearm

Once your firearm license is approved, the dealer will release your firearm to you.
From this moment, you are officially a licensed firearm owner in South Africa.
